The Memory Stick is a manufacturer-specific memory medium of Sony.
With its slim, long shape with the dimensions 21.5 x 50 x 2.8 mm, the Memory Stick looks like a stick of gum and is therefore jokingly referred to us "chewing gum memory".
The Memory Stick is a Flash memory medium developed by Sony. The stick has been available since autumn of 1998.

The Memory Stick has to date been used almost exclusively in Sony products, such as digital cameras, Vaio notebooks and the Sony MS Walkman, which plays music files in the ATRAC3 format. In the USA, Epson offers the Stylus Photo 875DCS, an inkjet printer with a Memory Stick reader.

Currently, both the "normal" Memory Stick and the variant Memory Stick with the copy protection Magic Gate are available. Both versions differ in colour and have different electronics.

Both media are suitable for digital cameras, but the white stick with Magic Gate offers a copy protection process and is suitable for storing music. A write protection switch is also located on the bottom side.

Magic Gate serves to ensure copyright protection of audio information. Other data remains unaffected by this. The grey-blue Sony Memory Stick without Magic Gate is available in the capacities 8, 16, 32 and 64 MByte.
