Computer viruses can latch on to any file. Computer systems are quickly infected through the copying of an infected file or sending it via email from one person to the next.
Some computer viruses are programmed in such a manner that they are equipped with a payload. On the one hand, these payloads can affect the display of messages or images, and on the other hand also lead to the destruction of files, reformatting of the hard disk or other damages.
A few years ago, viruses used to spread but only through floppy disks. However, ever since the Internet started its worldwide conquest, viruses too have taken up the new medium as a space for spreading.
One can protect oneself by using firewalls and current anti-virus programmes. However, it is important that the anti-virus signature file, more or less the vaccine of the anti-virus signature file, keeps up with the rapid development of viruses. The programme is of no use, if you install an anti-virus programme but do not update the concerned signature file at least one a week. Therefore, several anti-virus programme manufacturers recommend a daily update for home users and an hourly update for business users.
In many cases, anti-virus programmes can prevent an infection and the consequences resulting therefrom. The professional engineers of CONVAR, the additional Datenretter™, come to your rescue, if a virus has damaged files or even the entire storage medium.
